Have you ever noticed in pictures from the 50s, women were super skinny? They all had the perfect hour glass figure and were very petite. Women of the 50s didn’t have time to go to the gym, so they had under garments to take care of that! They actually had foundation garments that literally sucked them in. They were very uncomfortable, but eventually the ladies got use to them and became a piece of their daily wear!
I know when most people think of 50s fashion their mind goes straight to saddle shoes, poodle skirts and cat eye glasses. The poodle skirt remains one of the most memorable fashion piece of the 50s.
The poodle skirt made its big debut in 1947 when Juli Lynne Charlot needed a skirt for a Christmas party. She was broke and knew how to sew, so she decided to design her own. The skirt caught on and she was asked to make skirts for other women. The skirt was originally designed with dachshunds that had 3 different personalities. Flirty, snobby, and the 3rd dog was a male attracted to them. Juli wanted the skirts to be a “conversation starter” and every skirt tell a different story.
The skirt became most popular in 1952! It is considered the very first “teenage fashion trend”. How cool?! Many movie stars were wearing them and the skirt was featured in tons of maginzines! Eventually Juli decided to open her own shop and designed the skirts herself.
I’ve always thought the poodle skirt was super cute! I love 50s fashion and it was interesting reading up on it and learning more about it! Stay tuned because next Friday will be all about 60s-70s fashion!! I hope you enjoyed my first bit of Flashback Friday!
